At the YMCA, we believe deeply in the power of the classic camp experience to set children on a path towards physical, mental, and emotional well-being for a lifetime. Studies show:

  • Camp experiences foster independence and self-confidence for 74% of children who participate (American Camp Association)
  • Children who attend summer camp demonstrate improved social skills and resilience (Centers for Disease Control)
  • 63% of camp alumni credit camp for shaping their career choices (American Camp Association)
  • Camp attendance correlates with higher educational achievement and success in later life (Psychology Today)

Unfortunately, the cost of Camp can put the experience out of reach for too many families.

  • A CBS News report has found that camp fees have increased by as much as 70% in the last decade, far outpacing inflation.
  • The average weekly cost for camp has reached $314, a significant bill that puts a strain on families.

Providing Access to Summer Camp With Financial Assistance

Many camps around the country offer financial aid and other forms of assistance. In fact, according to the American Camp Association, 20% of camps offer needs-based financial aid. Still, too many families are left stretching their budgets thin each summer.

Which is why the Greater Philadelphia Y has committed itself to being an industry leader in affordability, financial aid, and accessibility. We are committed to a safe, quality camp experience in every form we provide it – Day Camp, Specialty Camp and our sleepaway camp, Camp Speers in the Poconos – at a price families can afford.

  • Our average weekly rate for summer day camp is just $249 per week, roughly 20% lower than the national average.
  • In 2023, we awarded more than a quarter million dollars in financial aid, helping families at double the average rate of other camps.
  • Almost 10% of our campers received some form of subsidy to help with the cost of a week in our programs.
  • With the help of generous funders, we host more than 200 children from Philadelphia and Camden totally FREE through our Camp Philly program.

Fostering Development Through High Quality Camp Experiences

Our programs are focused on instilling the YMCA’s core values in campers – the values of respect, responsibility, honesty & caring. At a time when people are feeling isolated, we continue to connect with kids through these programs.

Our camps are also known for their educational opportunities. Whether it’s allowing children to focus on a particular interest in our specialty camps, or supplemental learning opportunities at day camps, or environmental studies at Camp Speers. Children don’t just have a social experience; they also have a learning experience.

And parents get the peace of mind that comes from a Y Camp experience. As the region’s largest childcare provider, we have the systems and practices to ensure your child’s safety. Our century of camp experience also ensures your child will have a rich, rewarding experience that will make the most of your investment.
