Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity.
Although the statistics are bleak, drowning is preventable, and the Y - as America’s leading swim instructor for more than 100 years - is uniquely positioned to offer this life-saving program.
The YMCA’s Safety Around Water program is a yearly free event that can help you make sure your kids learn essential water safety skills, which can open up a world of possibilities for them to satisfy their curiosity safely.
Swimming can have a significantly positive effect over a whole lifetime. As a skill, it can never be unlearned. As a form of exercise, it can keep a person active throughout adulthood, thanks to its low-impact effects. Children, in particular, reap the benefits of increased confidence and freedom. And swimming opens new avenues to socialization.
The YMCA has taught more people to swim than any other entity in the US. Last year alone, the Greater Philadelphia YMCA taught more than 32,000 children and adults. What’s more, we teach swimming at every level, with more than 1000 children participating in our competitive swim programs across the region. It’s hard to find a more-experienced team of instructors anywhere.
Safety Around Water Events
Learn life-saving skills and build your confidence around water at one of our Safety Around Water events. These events are designed to teach kids water safety skills that help reduce the risk of drowning and build their skills and confidence in and around water.
A typical session includes:
- Exercises to help kids adjust to being in the water
- Instruction for skill sets that kids can use if they unexpectedly find themselves in the water, like: jumping, pushing, turning, grab and swim, float swimming.
- Safety topics like what to do if you see someone in the water who needs help
- Fun activities that reinforce skill development
