Since its inception, the YMCA has always been a fun and positive community for all members, regardless of ability.

The Y hosts special programs and events catered towards those with mental and physical disabilities, giving them a chance to experience our pools, activity classes and more. Click on the links below to learn more about our programs.

Special Seals Swim Classes

Help your child discover the joy of swimming! Swimmers will become adjusted to water, learn space and body awareness and explore different movement and positions. Instructors are experienced in working with children having a variety of special needs.

Help your child discover the joy of swimming! Swimmers will become adjusted to water, learn space and body awareness and explore different movement and positions. Instructors are experienced in working with children having a variety of special needs:

  • 30 minute classes, 1-2 days per week
  • Limited space available for privates/waiting list option

Special Olympics

Special Olympics are open to Burlington and Camden County residents who have developmental and/or physical disabilities. Swimmers will compete in one tri-meet, one sectional meet and the New Jersey State Olympic Games.

Requirements

  • Must be 8 years of age or older
  • YMCA Facility or Program membership required
  • Swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool, unassisted without stopping
  • Assistance into the pool is available
  • Limited to 30 swimmers
  • Held at the Burlington-Riverfront YMCA only
  • Must complete a SONJ 3 year Medical Form

Competitions

Swimmers will compete in area meets, one sectional meet and the SONJ Summer Gamer Games. The state games are held at the College of New Jersey over a three-day weekend and include an opening ceremony and the presentation of gold, silver and bronze medals.
