FITNESS THAT PACKS A PUNCH

“Do you know why I enjoy Body Combat so much? It’s because for an hour, I can’t think about anything else. I work hard, I sweat, I release all my stress and when I leave, I feel like a new person, and a bad-ass.” A member told me that last week and she’s not alone in how this one particular class makes her feel. We hear it a lot.

Body Combat is a mixed martial arts inspired cardio workout that draws influences from karate, kickboxing, tae kwon do, muay thai, boxing, capoeira, kung fu, and jiu-jitsu. It’s an hour long and in case you’re worried- there’s no contact in Body Combat – in fact, you don’t need any special equipment- just yourself and I’m here to tell you -everyone can do Body Combat. . I tell first timers that if you can count to 8 and have ever, even once in your life, wanted to kick or punch something, then you can do Body Combat. I also tell them to take the class 4 or 5 times before deciding that they’ve found their new addiction. The first few times in a new class, the brain is working harder than the body and the body is working REALLY hard!

But, wait, you say – I am a lover, not a fighter! I don’t think I will like this class. I beg to differ. Like any great (dare I say, intense?) cardio work out, Body Combat is a stress reliever – and who doesn’t have some stress in their lives? We joke in our classes that Body Combat has been keeping children alive and marriages together for years.

Am I too old for Body Combat? We get asked that a lot. If you want to take the class, you are not too old. There are lower impact modifications for all the moves and you are in control of the intensity of your workout-no matter what your age! Our oldest member that takes Body Combat will be 80 this August. Four years ago, she was the victim of a potential purse snatching at our local mall. When the man grabbed her purse, she turned around with it and gave him a hard cross (a punch with the rear arm) straight to his nose. He dropped like a sack of potatoes. She got in her car and drove away. Even though there is no contact in class, with proper technique, the moves you do might come in handy some day!

Body Combat will improve your fitness, sculpt your muscles, get your heart rate into peak zone and is a guaranteed fun workout. There is more to it than that, though. Coming to Body Combat isn’t only about the workout. Like all Group Exercise classes, the shared experience, the routine of being in the same place on a given class time, the joking, the camaraderie, the genuine compliments that are shared freely among members, the endorphin rush that comes from a great workout – those are the intangibles that turn taking a class into something bigger than ourselves. There are a lot of gimmicks out there- this isn’t one of them. Yes, I am a Body Combat believer- but I think you will be too. And this isn’t about selling a service to you- it’s about sharing something I believe in- something I know will help you – if you give it a try.
