Ability Programs

The Ambler Area YMCA’s recreational program setting provides a unique experience with an emphasis on sports, social interaction and fun. The Ability Initiative strives to reach youth with special needs in the Ambler area by providing them a safe place to grow and socialize in a nurturing environment.

ABILITY HEALTH & WELLNESS PROGRAMS

Ability Teen Fitness

Ages: 10-18

This semi-private class is designed for kids ages 10-18 for with special needs. Participants will be introduced to the fitness center mezzanine in a 1:4 trainer to participant ratio. Strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness will be developed in a fun, caring atmosphere. Importance of healthy lifestyle choices and fitness center etiquette will be discussed to institute lifelong fitness goals.

Ability – Gymnastics

This program for children with special needs and their siblings will bring families together for an inclusive gymnastics class.

ABILITY AQUATIC SWIM INSTRUCTION

Ability Aquatic Instruction – Parent/Child

Ages: 4-12

Make a Splash! An interactive aquatic class for children diagnosed with social disabilities that combines games & activities with basic swimming skills. Come join this fun, supportive environment! Class size is limited to ensure one-on-one time and promote group interaction. Parents, TSS workers or legal guardians must be in the water at all times. This class is held in the warm water, zero depth entry family fun pool.

Ability Aquatic Instruction – Polliwog Advanced

Ages: 6-12

A beginning class for the advancing swimmer. Child must be willing to swim without a parent in the pool. This class with a 1:4 teacher, student ratio is for children with special needs who are comfortable in the water and can swim short distances independently. Water safety, swimming on front and back, floating, gliding/streamline position are emphasized.

Ability Aquatic Instruction – Minnow

Ages: 8-14

This class is designed for youth with special needs ages 8-14 who can swim for at least 25 yards (form does not matter). It is a hybrid of a swimming lesson and a fitness class. Endurance swims, basic water aerobics to develop muscle tone will be paired with developmentally appropriate stroke development, socialization and fitness through games.

Ability Private Swim Lesson

Ability Semi-Private Swim Lesson

Ages: 4 & up

An aquatic chair lift is available to lower members to our heated 86 degree water. Aqua belts, barbells, noodles, and other equipment are available. Please contact Cait Waxler at ext. 1537 or cwaxler@philaymca.org.

Y-Knot Stingrays Ability Swim Team

Ages: 5 and up

Participants will develop swim strokes, improve stamina, develop team skills, build self confidence and increase fitness. The program provides an outlet where children are able to explore their abilities, develop skills and find within themselves the confidence to pursue their goals and open the door to a lifelong hobby. Practice is offered twice a week giving swimmers an option to come 1 or 2 times per week. Swimmers will be given a 30-minute time slot based on availability. See the flyer PDF attached below.

Ability Aquatic Community Swim

Ages: All

Recreational Swim for children and adults with special needs. This program promotes socialization and fun. All participants are required to fill out an application/medical release form (see below). Participants must be accompanied by a parent, TSS worker, or legal guardian. Parents, TSS workers or legal guardians must be in the water at all times. An aquatic chair lift is available to lower participants into the pool. All participants must complete a swimming test administered by the lifeguard.

Day & Time

Saturday: 12:00 – 1:00 PM

Full Privilege Members & Non Members: Free

ABILITY TEEN PROGRAMS

Tween/Teen Nights – Special Needs

This is a recreation program for both Tweens ages 10-12 and Teens ages 13-17 and with special needs. They are able to enjoy a variety of structured activities including crafts, swimming (optional), gym activities, movies, and much opportunity for socializing with peers. See our Events page for days and times. To register your child, please contact the Welcome Center.

Ability Tween/Teen Club

A fun-filled evening for tweens and teens with special needs to socialize and be physically active. Each week youth will explore a different area of the Y. Activities rotate and will include: swimming, board games, basketball, movie nights and crafts. Sports

Ability Multi-Sport Instruction – Preschool

In a FUN FILLED format, children with special needs are introduced to soccer, basketball, hockey, tennis, t-ball and other great games. This is a great way to get your child excited about playing sports while building self esteem and improving coordination, motor skills, and being part of a team in a low stress atmosphere.
