IN STEP WITH TEENS
From Fitness and Sports to Mentoring and Tutoring Programs the Y offers many programs and services for teens!
We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. Because of the Y, more young people in neighborhoods around our community are taking a greater interest in learning and making smarter life choices. At the Y, children and teens learn values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.
The Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA’s Y Achievers program is designed to expose 5th-12th graders to a wide range of career options and the tools to achieve their higher educational goals. Y Achievers encompasses 5 Programmatic Thrusts: College Readiness, Career Exploration, Leadership Development, Character Development and Community Service.
9th-12th graders participate in workshops dubbed Clusters which provide mentorships from a diverse group of professionals and give students hands-on career experiences through school-year long projects.
Clusters are held at Villanova University the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month.
5th-8th graders participate in leadership sessions and activities for their age group. College and career choices are introduced with the goal of preparing students with the tools they need to excel in the program through 12th grade. Sessions are held at the Spring Valley Y, every other Thursday evening.
The program runs September – June. Each Y Achiever receives a free one-year YMCA membership while enrolled in the program.
College students and working or retired professionals are welcomed as volunteers.

Help the community, learn leadership skills and make friends. Teen Leaders have opportunities to volunteer, discuss issues, and attend retreats. Y Teen Leaders meet at the Spring Valley Y on Mondays, 6:30-8:00pm.
Y Teen Leaders is free for Full Privilege and Program Members.

7th Grade Membership Initiative

Wellness Center Youth/Teen Usage Policy
To ensure the physical and mental well-being of all participants, the minimum age required to work out in the Wellness Center is 10 years old. All participants ages 10-14 are required to wear a wristband while using the Wellness Center equipment. Participants are eligible to receive a wristband one they have completed three consultations and demonstrated that they know safe and effective workout techniques.
Participants ages 10-11 may use the Wellness Center under direct supervision (within arm’s reach) of a parent of guardian after completing three wellness consultations. These participants will receive a white wristband at the Wellness Center desk when they enter.
Participants ages 12-14 may use the Wellness Center alone after completing three Wellness Consultations. These participants will receive a blue wristband at the Wellness Center desk when they enter.

Our Wellness Coaches will assist you in getting familiar with all of our exercise equipment and program options. Your Wellness Coach will discuss your wellness goals and help you establish a beginning program. Three complimentary appointments are available for new and existing members. Small Group Training Classes
The Spring Valley Y offers Teen/Tween Small Group Training classes for ages 11-15. Small Group Training Programs are specialty classes designed for small groups and high attention, resulting in a form of semi-private training under our class specific outline goals. In these programs, we strive to create continually varying programs with new, challenging, and functional moves. Class size is limited and registration is required. Group Exercise Classes
Our FREE Group Exercise Classes offer a variety of exercise options and intensities for ages 12 & up. Instructors may use discretion with youth using bikes or other equipment where size may affect safety. Visit our Group Exercises Classes page for more information and class descriptions.
