Thousands of Children learn to swim at the Y every year!

No matter your age or ability, you can learn to swim at the Philadelphia Freedom Valley YMCA. Our YMCA trained and certified instructors cover swimming skills, stroke technique and water safety in a friendly and encouraging environment. With small instructor to student ratio, our swim lessons provide personal instruction while providing a fun atmosphere.

How Old is Your Child?

At the Y, we are dedicated to providing student-centered swim lessons designed to nurture the development of each individual participant through our unique and dynamic group lessons. To help you determine which lesson level will create the best learning environment for your child, click through the options below.

6 to 36 Months 3 to 5 Years 6 to 12 Years
Parent Child Classes

Fun for children who have graduated from Parent and Child but are not ready to swim on their own. Children, accompanied by an adult, will explore blowing bubbles, floating, and basic water skills. Children must wear swim diapers under their swim suits.

Can your child swim independently?

This is your child’s first swimming experience without a parent or guardian. This class will focus on water comfort, blowing bubbles, kicking, paddling, and floating with assistance. Independent swimming will be introduced. Water safety and proper use of Instructional Flotation Devices (IFD) are emphasized. Pike Advanced

This class is for children who are comfortable in the water and are ready to start swimming short distances without a flotation device. Water safety will be emphasized as well as continued breath control and beginning stroke development.

This class is for children who are comfortable in the water and are ready to start swimming short distances without a flotation device. Water safety will be emphasized as well as continued breath control and beginning stroke development.

Eel

Welcome children who are comfortable in the water, as they continue to develop skills learned at the Pike level. Plus, learn to put their faces in the water, float¬ing, jumping in, and paddling without support. Floatation is used in this level.

Beginner level for this age group. Participants will work on floating, kicking and paddling on the front, back and side. This class is to help children swim short distances without the aid of a flotation device.

Polliwog Advanced

Advanced Beginner level for this age group who are comfortable completely submerging their heads under water. They will be introduced to rhythmic breathing and stroke development. They are expected to be able to swim at least 3 feet prior to entering this class.

Can your child swim 25 yards of front crawl and back crawl with good form?

Guppy

Students will continue to work on front, back and side paddle. In addition to these strokes, they will also learn floating, treading water, diving safety rules and side breathing. This class is for children who can swim 25 yards (one length of the pool) on front, back and side before moving on to the Minnow level.

Can your swimmer demonstrate 50 yards of front crawl/breast stroke?

Minnow

In this level students will begin learning breaststroke, sidestroke and backstroke. They also learn many safety skills including treading water and swimming with a PFD. This class is for children who can swim 25 yards of rudimentary front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and elementary back stroke before progressing into the Fish level.

Can your child demonstrate at least 3 continuous lengths of front and back crawl and 25 yards of butterfly?

Fish

Participants will continue to work on all strokes, focusing on refinement and endurance. The butterfly stroke and open turns will also be introduced in this level. This class is for children who can swim 50 yards of front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke and elemen¬tary backstroke before moving into the Flying Fish level.

Can your child demonstrate at least 4 continuous lengths of front and back crawl, breaststroke, and 50 yards of butterfly?

Flying Fish

In this level participants will focus on personal safety, along with improving skills and endurance. This class is for children who can swim 15 yards of butterfly and 100 yards of front crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, back crawl, and side stroke before progressing into the Shark level.

Shark

The shark level teaches students about personal safety, rescue skills and water sports and games. New strokes introduced include over arm sidestroke and the trudgen crawl. This class is for children who can swim a 200 yard individual medley along with 50 yards of over arm sidestroke and the trudgen crawl.
